Cubs Make History in Three-Game Series against the Pirates

The Cubs hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field from September 13 to 15 and accomplished something it hadn't done for more than 120 years. The team scored at least 14 runs in each of those three games and finished the series with 47 runs, which is the most the team has recorded in any three-game set since 1894. Chicago had 48 runs over the course of three consecutive games against the Pirates that season.

Moreover, Chicago became only the fourth MLB team since 1908 to score at least 14 runs in three straight games. It hadn't been done since the Tigers accomplished the feat in 1993.

One of the key contributors to the team's success over the weekend was Kris Bryant. The former National League (NL) MVP was named NL Player of the Week on September 16 after registering five home runs and 13 RBI over the course of the prior week. As of September 17, he had 31 home runs and 77 RBI to go along with a .289 batting average.

The baseball world has been engaged in an ongoing debate in recent months over the possible extension of protective netting at Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums. Sparking the debate was an incident in May at Houston’s Minute Maid Park where a foul ball hit by Cubs center fielder Albert Almora Jr. fractured the skull of a 2-year-old girl. The incident follows a rash of fan injuries from foul balls, including the death of a 79-year-old woman at Dodgers Stadium in 2018.

In June, the Chicago White Sox became the first MLB team to take steps to protect its fans better when it announced that it would install foul-pole-to-foul-pole netting at Guaranteed Rate Field. Since adding the netting in July, the White Sox have been joined by other MLB teams, including the Washington Nationals, in installing extended netting at their home parks.

When asked, Cubs players responded favorably to the White Sox announcement, expressing their support for the move. For his part, Almora acknowledged his incident had brought attention to the issue and said that he was happy the White Sox had taken action.

David Bote Signs Five-Year Extension with Cubs

Barring a trade in the future, the player who was responsible for one of the best moments of Chicago's 2018 will remain with the team through the 2024 season. David Bote, who hit a game-winning, 2-out, 2-strike grand slam against the Washington Nationals on Sunday Night Baseball last August, signed a five-year, $15 million contract extension with the Cubs in early April. The contract carries club options for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. 

A 26-year-old native of Longmont, Colorado, Bote was selected by the Cubs in the 18th round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft. The infielder made his big league debut last season and registered a .239 batting average to go along with six home runs and 33 RBI through 74 games. He boasts a .257 batting average, three home runs, and 16 RBI through the first 35 games of the 2019 season.
